Course Overview

Duration: Tuesday, January 21, 2020-Friday, February 21, 2020 (Approximately 5 weeks)
*Monday, February 24 and Tuesday, February 25 are optional.
Venue: Tokyo and Hiroshima City
Participation Fee: No fees charged for selected participants (including travel costs, travel insurance, accommodation costs, and approved living expenses)

The designated 10 countries, from which applications are accepted for the JFY2019 Primary Course.

During the Coursework in Japan, the Primary Course provides seminars and workshops about peacebuilding and development. Throughout the Coursework, emphasis is put on interactions between facilitators and participants (Program Associates). Participatory approach that incorporates problem-based-learning tools is taken during the Coursework. The aim of the Coursework is to master a high-level of knowledge of peacebuilding and development. Through workshops, the participants will learn to apply the acquired knowledge to practice and to develop practical skills in the field of peacebuilding and development.

The participants will include 15 Japanese Program Associates and 10 non-Japanese Program Associates. The working language for the course work is English. The Coursework will provide a conducive environment for learning about peacebuilding and development from one another through group work in multinational teams.

In the Coursework of the “Primary Course” implemented by Hiroshima Peacebuilders Center (HPC), the following three policies are the core pillars for management of the project which emphasizes that the Course is focused on human resource development for peacebuilding and development of practitioners.

Firstly, the Primary Course aims to develop practical knowledge and skills of the participants. In accordance with the Program’s objective to develop experts in the fields of peacebuilding and development, the Coursework provides necessary knowledge, skills and experiences relevant to policy issues and other practical work in these fields.

Secondly, the Primary Course is designed to develop the “Competencies” of the participants. These Competencies are skills that are crucial in working for the United Nations and other international organizations. For example, exercising leadership effectively in a multinational team is highly regarded by international organizations and it is well-considered during the application process. The Coursework is designed in such a way that the participants will consciously improve the relevant Competencies.

Lastly, the Primary Course　provides a valuable opportunity to build networks with experienced lecturers, practitioners and graduates of the Program, many of whom are Japanese nationals engaged in peacebuilding and development .
