A Video Message from the UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu
Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu has been serving as Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs since May 1st, 2017. She is currently the highest-ranking Japanese official at the UN. Prior to taking on this post, she served as Assistant Administrator of the Crisis Response Unit at the UN Development Programme from 2014.
Ms. Nakamitsu was previously Director of the Asia and the Middle East Division of the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations between 2012 and 2014, and from 2008 to 2012 Director of the Department’s Division of Policy, Evaluation and Training. She started her UN career as a Junior Professional Officer (JPO) at United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and continuously worked at the frontline of humanitarian assistance through the headquarters and the regional office after her JPO deployment. In Turkey, she engaged in the assistance to the Kurdish refugee crisis as a legal officer with the late Ms. Sadako Ogata, who was the UN High Commissioner for Refugees at the time.
